How does the detoxification process work? 

Detoxification primary occurs in the liver where chemical compounds known as lipophiles are transformed into more water-soluble metabolites and eliminated from the body through the urine (5). There are two primary phases that take place. 

Phase I occurs when toxins, such as drugs, pesticides, and hormones, are leaked into the bloodstream and enter the liver. A group of enzymes known as P450 enzymes reduce these compounds and change their chemical form by adding an oxygen molecule to them.  

During phase II, liver produces enzymes further transform the chemical structure of these toxins by adding a water-soluble group to them. This makes them easier to pass through the body where they are excreted through the urine (5)(6).
